The alkaloid pattern of Templetonia incana has been investigated to pr
ovide data for comparison with other species of the genus Templetonia.
The alpha-pyridone alkaloids cytisine, N-methylcytisine, anagyrine an
d some other quinolizidine alkaloids were found as major constituents
in leaves, twigs, flowers and seeds of this plant. Other compounds tha
t were identified include the bicyclic quinolizidine alkaloids lupinin
e and epilupinine and two hydroxysparteines. The absence of the ormosa
nine-type alkaloids which are typical constituents for other species o
f Templetonia, supports the idea that this species should be excluded
from the genus Templetonia. The absence of tetrahydrocytisine derivati
ves in T. incana separates this species from T. biloba. Copyright (C)
