The distribution profiles of the chemical structural changes induced i
n low density polyethylene(LDPE) irradiated by various ion-beams were
obtained by micro-FT-IR measurement. Predominant species induced by io
n-beam irradiation were trans-vinylene, hydroxyl group and carbonyl gr
oup. It was found that the depth profiles of these species resemble th
e Bragg curve, but they are rather different from the depth profile of
the stopping power calculated by TRIM code. The terminal of the chemi
cal reaction was observed to be deeper than the range calculated by TR
IM code for all ion particles. This suggests that the energy profile i
n the region which the energy of the ion particle becomes lower is ver
y complicated. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
