The 6-yl-radicals of uracil and 1,3-dimethyluracil reduced Cu(II)-amin
o acid complexes to produce Cu(I), that was proved by the formation of
the complex with 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (DMP). Rate constan
ts for the reduction increased with increasing pH, ranging from 10(6)
to 10(8) dm) mol(-1) s(-1). The kinetic pKa obtained for the complexes
of glycine, alanine, and valine were all in agreement with pKa of the
uracil-OH-adduct radical. The formation rate of Cu(I)-DMP complex sug
gests the existence of the transient adduct between initial reactants.
