Abstract
The scalar theory of image formation for a strongly spherical object i n reflection confocal optical microscopy is considered. The image cont rast is derived from the far-field scattering amplitude. Experimentall y obtained images of the sphere are seen to be in good agreement with the theoretical prediction. (C) 1996 Optical Society of America.
