In the early stages of cleaning a Pt(110) crystal, an interesting seri
es bf reconstructions is found to appear, which are attributed to diss
olved carbon-based impurities diffusing to the surface. By carefully c
ontrolling the preparation conditions while measuring with surface X-r
ay diffraction, we were able to investigate the structures of these re
constructions and explain them with a simple Hendricks-Teller model. T
o explain the unusual evolution of the linewidth, we found it necessar
y to invoke the existence of a new (1 x 5) local arrangement, intermed
iate between the previously observed (1 x 2) and (1 x 3) phases.
