Carbon nanotubes (with and without encapsulated material) as well as n
anoparticles and onion-like structures have been generated by electrol
ysis in molten alkali halide salts using carbon electrodes under an ar
gon atmosphere. The nature of the products depends upon several factor
s including the electrolysis voltage and current, depth of electrode i
mmersion in the electrolyte, the length of time the current is maintai
ned and the electrolyte.
