Epileptic seizures during sleep are common. Nocturnal synchronization
in thalamocortical networks appears to contribute to the facilitation
of sleep-related epilepsy. Specific epileptic syndromes associated wit
h sleep, the differential diagnosis of nocturnal spells, and the use o
f video-electroencephalographic polysomnography are discussed. The man
agement of sleep-related seizures is outlined.
