The phenomenon of somatization - that is, that some patients present p
hysical symptoms that cannot be supported by organic findings - has en
gaged medicine throughout centuries. Knowledge of history is useful in
the present exploration of the phenomenon and in the discussion of it
s nosologic state and limitation. In the present review the historical
lines are drawn, with the greatest importance attached to hysteria an
d the various underlying hypotheses.
