Abstract
Olfactory epithelium that is specialized for the detection of water-bo rne odors is located in different cranial cavities in larval and postm etamorphic Xenopus. Soybean agglutinin histochemistry reveals that bot h 'water-noses' innervate only the ventral olfactory bulb (OB). This i s evidence for a parcellation of the OB into a ventral portion mediati ng information on water-soluble odorants and a dorsal part that proces ses information on volatile substances.
