A novel distance sensing technique using digital speckle shearing inte
rferometry is outlined in this paper. The primary incentive for the de
velopment of this technique is of one that can be: (i) incorporated in
to any TV imaging system; (ii) used as a focusing mechanism; (iii) sui
ted to measure from diffuse targets; and (iv) relatively insensitive t
owards the environment. Results obtained reveal the feasibility of fur
ther research and development of this technique for practical applicat
