The X-ray crystal structure analysis of bis(1,3-dimethylcyclopentadien
yl)titanium(III) chloride revealed that it is a centrosymmetric chlori
ne-bridged dimer [(eta(5)-C(5)H(3)Me(2))(2)Ti(mu-Cl)](2) (1) with the
Ti-Ti distance of 3.9155(8) Angstrom. Its skeleton is virtually identi
cal with those of the [(eta(5)-C5H5)(2)Ti(mu-Cl)](2) and [(eta(5)-C(5)
H(4)Me)(2)Ti(mu-Cl)](2) dimers. The solution EPR study proved that 1 r
emains a dimer in toluene whereas it dissociates in 2-methyltetrahydro
furan (MTHF) to give (eta(5)-C(5)H(3)Me(2))(2)TiCl. MTHF. The EPR spec
tra of frozen toluene solutions proved that 1 forms the triplet state
whose g-tensor and zero-field splitting D are virtually the same as th
ose of [(eta(5)-C5H5)(2)Ti(mu-Cl)](2).
