The paper describes mathematical techniques for enhancing/tailoring op
timal estimation and on-line control algorithms for use within the sel
f-tuning framework. In particular when dealing with fast acting plant
one is compelled to make use of low order model structures and emphasi
s placed on enhanced estimation algorithms. Conversely when dealing wi
th low bandwidth non-linear systems, significant benefits can be made
by tailoring the models to match the identified system non-linearities
. By drawing on experience gained from designing and applying self-tun
ing techniques to two industrial systems the benefits of the enhanced
algorithms are elucidated.
