Abstract
Here we propose that the spin gap properties of the underdoped cuprate s may be associated with a local inhomogeneous structure in the CuO2 p lanes. Experimental evidence for such structure is discussed along wit h suggestions regarding how such local structure might give rise to a spin gap.
