Abstract
This paper investigates the performance of a novel snubber circuit des igned for GTO assisted on-load tap changer circuits. The performance o f the new snubber is compared with that of conventional circuits. It i s shown that the proposed snubber provides effective protection for th e switching device under all circuit conditions, and is considered sui table for switching non-zero currents in circuits of variable inductan ce.
