The electrodeposition and properties of poly(1,8-diaminonaphthalene) f
ilms on Au electrodes have been studied using electrochemical quartz c
rystal microbalance and crystal impedance measurements. Redox switchin
g of films exposed to aqueous 0.1 mol dm(-3) HClO4 is accompanied by n
on-monotonic mass changes: proton, counter-ion and solvent transfers o
ccur to extents dependent upon the experimental timescale. The films a
re also able to extract Hg2+ ions from solution, via complexation with
amine groups on the polymer. Coulometric and gravimetric data are con
sistent with a 1:1 mercury:amine complexation stoichiometry.
