The semivolatile ketoaldehydes -gamma-methylene-2-(3-oxobutyl)-cyclobu
tanebutanal 1 and methyl-gamma-oxo-2-(3-oxobutyl)-cyclobutanebutanal 2
and formaldehyde have been identified as the main products of the rea
ction of B-caryophyllene with ozone in the gas phase. In minor amounts
ylene-4,12,12-trimethyl-5-oxabicyclo[8.2.0.0(4,5)] dodecane 3 was als
o formed. Nature and yields of these carbonyl products are discussed i
n terms of oxidation mechanisms involving the gas-phase reaction with
