Quantum statistical distributions for partons provide a fair descripti
on of deep inelastic scattering data at Q(2)=3 and 10 (GeV/c)(2). Stud
y of the polarized structure functions seems to suggest an alternative
possible solution of the spin crisis based on the Pauli principle. In
this scheme, in fact, it becomes apparent that the defects of the Got
tfried sum rule and Ellis-Jaffe sum rule for the proton are strongly c
onnected. This possibility finds particular evidence from the phenomen
ological observation that the relation Delta u=2 (F) over tilde+u-d-1
seems to be satisfied well by parton distributions.
