The relative response factors for 174 compounds have been determined u
sing a helium pulsed discharge photoionization detector. The values we
re obtained with a relative standard deviation that ranged to 4.3% wit
h a median of 1%. The mean values of the relative mass response factor
s ranged from 0.26 to 1.18. If the detector is not calibrated and equa
l response factors are assumed, a potential error of +/-32% could be e
xpected. The SCF molecular orbitals of these same molecules were calcu
lated and used to determine the number of ionizable electrons based up
on the He-2 continuous emission. The molar response of the compounds a
nd the number of ionizable electrons are well correlated.
