Seven cases of acute intestinal intussusception requiring emergency su
rgical treatment are reported. These cases accounted for 1.7% of all c
ases of intestinal obstruction treated surgically over a ten-year peri
od at the Yaounde Central Hospital. Mean age was 42 years, Preoperativ
e diagnosis was difficult in the four patients with sub-acute symptoms
at presentation, The remaining three patients presented with acute sy
mptoms, Intestinal resection was required in every case. An intestinal
tumor was found in three patients, whereas no cause was detectable in
four patients. The pathology, diagnosis, and management of this rare
condition are reviewed.
