Abstract
Genetic variation among the populations of Rousettus egyptiacus from t he islands of the Gulf of Guinea (Bioko, Principe and Sao Tome) and tw o other continental populations of R. egyptiacus, (Rio Muni and Guinea Conakry) was studied in order to evaluate their systematic and evolut ionary relationships. Insular and mainland populations had similar lev els of genetic variation. The data support the subspecific assignment of the Sao Tome and Principe populations of R. egyptiacus.
