Abstract
In one group of languages (the Chinese type) a wh-pronoun inside an em bedded tensed/finite clause, a wh-clause, or a relative clause can be construed with the root [+ wh] Comp, In another group (the Iraqi Arabi c type) a wh-pronoun inside any of these clauses cannot be construed w ith the root [+ wh] Comp, unless the wh-pronoun is overtly moved to th e root clause. The article argues that this difference can be explaine d in terms of the properties of wh-pronouns in the two types of langua ges, the idea that wh-pronouns are anaphoric expressions (or wh-anapho rs), and the idea that wh-pronouns in situ do not undergo any form of covert movement.
