Prosthemium asterosporum sp, nov., an endophytic coelomycete occurring
on Betula pendula and sporadically on Acer pseudoplatanus is describe
d. The fungus was isolated from the phellem of living branches. Sporul
ation was observed in vitro and on artificially colonized twigs. Diffe
rences from the related taxon P. betulinum (anamorph of Pleomassaria s
iparia) are discussed.
