An iron-containing superoxide dismutase (EC 1.15.1.1) was isolated fro
m the soil-denitrifying bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The optical
and magnetic spectra of the protein are due to high-spin iron. Its lig
and microenvironment has distorted rhombic symmetry. The ESR spectrum
is pH-dependent. It is completely changed by fluoride ions and partial
ly modified by thiocyanate. The efficacy of inhibition of the iron-con
taining superoxide dismutase by inorganic ions decreases in the series
: CNS- > F- > N-3(-). The mechanisms of inhibition by F- and CNS- are
different.
