Abstract
Sixty six lactating sows were used for studying the effect of substitu ting wood shavings by sugar cane bagasse on the performance of piglet litters on using one or the other material for beds and farrowing pens . There were no differences in litter weight at weaning (6.16 vs 5.90 kg) or in mortality due to crushing (16% for both treatments). it is c oncluded that sugar cane bagasse can be used as beds for swine materni ty units.
