Abstract
A family of approximate models that are appropriate for describing the large-scale, geostrophically balanced, motion of the ocean and atmosp here are discussed. In particular, an approximate model valid for both the planetary-scale and the synoptic or mesoscale is systematically d erived in the context of the shallow water equations.
