Abstract
The novel octadecanuclear Cu-RE duster have been isolated from the rea ction system of aqueous Cu2+-RE(3+)-pyb (RE=Sm, Eu; pyb=pyridine betai ne) and characterized by single-crystal structural analysis. The resul ts show that the clusters comprise a [Cu(12)RE(6) (mu(5)-OH)(24)(mu(12 )-ClO4)](17+) octahedral core, which encapsulates a ClO4- ion and has 18 water molecules and 12 bridging pyb carboxylato ligands as external ligands.
