We have used a combination of laser desorption, separate multiphoton i
onization, and mass spectrometry to characterize films of perfluorinat
ed polyethers. Photoionization is achieved through end group chromopho
res, which are either present in the polymer or chemically attached. T
he technique provides parent molecular weight distributions without fr
agmentation. Examples are given of end group analysis, wavelength depe
ndent spectroscopy, analysis of repeat unit distributions in copolymer
s, and polymer degradation analysis.
