Abstract
We have measured the quantum-limited lpinewidth of a hard-edged unstab le cavity gas laser. Our results confirm the predicted resonant behavi or of the quantum-noise strength as a function of equivalent Fresnel n umber. This behavior is due to the nonorthogonality of the transverse eigenmodes.
