Single crystals of the compounds DienH(2)(H3O)[AlF6] and DienH(2)(H3O)
[FeF6] (Dien = Diethylenediamine or Piperazine) were obtained from aqu
eous HF solution. The compounds are isotypic and crystallize in the mo
noclinic space group P2(1)/c, Z = 8 with the unit cell parameters a =
1333.7(3), b = 1261.8(3), c = 1234.5(2) pm, beta = 115.79(3)degrees (A
l compound) and a = 1354.0(3), b = 1267.5(3), c = 1255.9(3) pm, beta =
115.48(3)degrees (Fe compound). The crystal structure consists of iso
lated [MF(6)](3-) anions, H3O+ and DienH(2)(2+) cations. The [MF(6)](3
-) octahedra are connected via very strong O-H ... F and N-H ... F-bri
dges forming a three dimensional network structure. This strong hydrog
en bonding was confirmed by the FTIR spectra.
