Abstract
Most strains of Vibrio splendidus biogroup 1, V. tubiashii, V. orienta lis, V. mytili and V. mediterranei show contradictory responses to the ADH (arginine dihydrolase) test when performed on Moeller's and Thorn ley's media, being positive only by the second method. We concluded th at the cause of these discrepancies relays on the presence of glucose on the former medium: the carbohydrate causes catabolite repression of the inducible ADH system of V. mediterranei; the immediate cause of i nhibition in the other four species remains unclear.
