Acid-catalyzed condensation of pyrrole and perfluoroalkyl aldehydes pr
oduced, in a single step, alpha,beta-unsubstituted 5-perfluoroalkyldip
yrromethanes, which were isolated and characterized for the first time
. These dipyrromethanes were used as the key intermediates in the synt
hesis of trans-perfluroalkylporphyrins as well as meso-tetrakis(perflu
oroalkyl)porphyrins The two-step procedure described here provides acc
ess to a wide variety of porphyrins with trans perfluoroalkyl groups.
