Abstract
The logarithm of the determinant of a contingency table allows evoluti onary information to be recovered from data generated under very gener al stochastic models. The variance of the estimate of the dissimilarit y between taxa is generally estimated with the help of resampling meth ods. We show that this technique leads to biased estimates, and we der ive exact formula. Practical implications are considered.
