Abstract
Preferential coarsening of the gamma '' (Ni3Nb) precipitates was obser ved in polycrystalline INCONEL 718 during creep which involved princip ally the growth of one of three variants at the expense of the others. The tendency and extent of preferential coarsening are analyzed in te rms of the interaction between the applied stress and the transformati on strains and probabilistically in terms of the orientation of the ga mma '' precipitates with respect to the tensile stress axis.
