For an improved determination of the Be-7(p,gamma)B-8 absolute cross s
ection, the reaction is studied in inverse kinematics. The study invol
ves a Be-7 radioactive ion beam of 8.0 MeV, a windowless H-2 gas targe
t, and an efficient recoil separator for the detection of the B-8 resi
dual nuclides. The techniques used to produce such a beam as well as t
he first direct observation of B-8 are reported.
