The evolution of a and c lattice constants of nonstoichiometric LiNbO3
lithium niobate is compared with literature results. Addition of pota
ssium oxide to the melt induces shortening of both parameters towards
the stoichiometry, without incorporation in the crystal of potassium.
On the contrary, with magnesium oxide addition in the melt, a lengthen
ing of both parameters is connected with substitution of lithium by ma
gnesium in a LiNbO3-Mg4Nb2O9 solid solution which obeys Vegard's law.
