This study takes place in a broader theme concerning the control of re
sidual stresses in parts made of aluminum alloys in the aeronautical f
ield Through the example of stress roll operation, the difficulties in
measuring residual stresses in real parts with complex shapes are pre
sented The hole drilling strain gagemethod is compared with the X-ray
diffraction method. In spite of the limitations inherent to scaling, t
he parameters influencing the stress roll process were inventoried and
their effets quntified on normalised specimens to characterize the fa
tigue behaviour of stress rolled specimens.
