High-speed video recording provided a study of pressure screening. The
study evaluated the effects of feed direction and existence of feed c
hamber using long fiber yield and shive removal efficiency. Feed direc
tion influenced partial distribution in the radial direction of the sc
reen basket. When using tangential feed direction, solid material conc
entrated near the screen surface. The feed chamber seemed to function
as a potential fluid volume for backflow. This detrimental effect was
more pronounced for axial feed construction. The feed construction see
med to have a slight effect on shive removal efficiency. Selection of
feed construction should use factors other than screening efficiency,
however, such as energy savings or maintainability.
