Thermotropic random copolyesters containing 2,2'-biphenylene rings, di
sclike mesogens in the polymer chain, were synthesised by the polycond
ensation method and characterised by viscosity measurements, and spect
ral analysis. Thermal properties of these polymers were investigated b
y DTA and DSC studies. The LC behaviour of these polymers were studied
by optical polarising microscopy in conjunction with WAXD studies. St
ructural modifications introduced along the main chian changed the typ
e of mesophase probably due to polar and interlocking effects.
