Three oligoacrylates with cyanobiphenyl mesogenic groups were synthesi
zed and fractionated into narrow fractions. The three oligoacrylates d
iffered in the length of spacers (four, five, or six methylene units)
in the main chain between the mesogenic groups. Analysis of the proper
ties of the mesophases of the obtained products and examination of the
plots of phase transition temperatures versus the degree of polymeriz
ation, led us to distinguish several molecular mass regions, each of w
hich was associated with a specific product. These regions involve the
region in which individual liquid crystals (LC monomers) exist and th
ose corresponding to suboligomers with the degree of polymerization P
< 10, oligomers with 10 < P < 100, and LC polymers with P > 100. A mol
ecular model that explains the specified boundaries was suggested.
