In this work we present a study of the magnetic and transport properti
es of the system LaNiO3-x (0 less than or equal to x less than or equa
l to 0.5) where the x=0 members is a well-known metallic oxide. We fou
nd the x=0.5 compound is an antiferromagnetic insulator at room temper
ature. The metal-insulator transition is observed for an x value aroun
d x greater than or equal to 0.25. The role played by the sample inhom
ogeneities on the occurrence of this transition is discussed.
