The nonperturbative coupled-angular-mode (CAM) method is applied to th
e treatment of the parallel velocity-assisted charge-transfer process
in grazing scattering of alkali-metal ions at Al(111) surface. The neu
tralization of Na+, K+, and Li+ projectiles is studied. A multistate t
reatment of the problem including projectile ground and excited states
is performed. Calculated neutral fractions in the scattered beam agre
e on a quantitative level with available experimental results over a w
ide range of scattering conditions. The role of the population of exci
ted states is discussed.
