During the last 15 years, mechanical-biological wastewater treatment p
lants in Germany have been increasingly supplemented by filtration pla
nts. Their technology, which is based on the one used for drinking wat
er processing, had to be adapted to the differing circumstances. Compa
nies specialised in filtration, as well as engineering offices are pla
nning these plants. Workers at wastewater treatment plants had to lear
n how to operate the filters. Not all the necessary adaptations went s
moothly. A number of operational problems have occurred during the las
t few years. Some problems have been analyzed by the Department of Env
ironmental Engineering of the Aachen Technical University (ISA), leadi
ng to suggestions for avoiding these mistakes in the future. Copyright
