Abstract
A new method for the synthesis of 3-alkoxybenzanthrones is reported. T he appropriate phase transfer catalysis conditions (a type of two-phas e system, solvent, solid phase, catalyst) were selected. Three 3-alkox ybenzanthrones were synthesized in high yields and purity under these conditions. Their absorption and fluorescent spectra were determined a nd the energy of the first excited state calculated. The utility of th e dyes for the mass-colouration of polystyrene was also demonstrated.
