The topological entropy of autonomous flows is evaluated by a method b
ased on symbolic dynamics and on the thermodynamic formalism for nonli
near dynamics. This technique, which applies to all generalized entrop
ies K-q, reproduces a well-known formula for the metric entropy and cl
arifies the relationship between a flow and the associated Poincare ma
ps, beyond the straightforward case of periodically forced nonautonomo
us systems. Numerical results for the Lorenz and Rossler systems are p
resented and verified with an independent estimator.
