Abstract
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. E 48, 1254 (1993)], an alternative proce dure is proposed for obtaining the nematic director field that minimiz es the total free energy of a nematic liquid crystal. In this Comment we show that this solution does not correspond to a minimum of the fre e energy.
