Five new oleanane-type triterpene glycosides named strogins 1-5 were i
solated from leaves of Staurogyne merguensis. Their structures were de
termined on the basis of chemical and spectral evidence. After strogin
s 1, 2 and 4 were held in mouth, water elicited a sweet taste. On the
other hand, strogins 3 and 5 had no activity. The structure-activity r
elationship is discussed. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
