Ultra fine cadmium sulfide powder was prepared by the metal-alkoxide m
ethod. Using this powder CdS films were fabricated, and their adhesive
and opto-electronic properties were evaluated, The CdS powder was syn
thesized by the reaction of cadmium ethoxide with hydrogen sulfide gas
in toluene, The primary particle size of the powder obtained was subm
icron, but particles agglomerated to several microns in diameter. This
CdS powder dispersed easily in the vehicle and gave a good printing p
aste. CdS pastes were screen-printed, dried and fired on alumina subst
rates, CdS films fired in air at 400-500 degrees C or in N-2 at 500-70
0 degrees C showed photoconductivity, The CdS him from metal-alkoxide
method showed good sinterability and high adhesive strength, Especiall
y, dense CdS films were obtained at low firing temperature, 400 degree
s C in ambient atmosphere without the addition of CdCl2 flux, which is
necessary in a conventional process.
