The layered manganocuprate Ln(3)Ba(2)Mn(2)Cu(2)O(12) (Ln = lanthanide)
consists of an intergrowth of single rock-salt layers with quadruple
oxygen-deficient perovskite layers. This structure is stabilized by a
particular ionic size at the Ln site (Ln = Sm, Eu, Gd). The ground sta
te changes from a spin glass to a ferromagnetic phase with decreasing
size of the Ln ion (Sm --> Gd).
