3,5-Dichloro-2-hydroxyacetophenone 1 on treatment with aromatic aldehy
des yields 3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxy-omega-arylidine acetophenones 2a-j w
hich on cyclisation with hydrazine hydrate, hydroxylamine hydrochlorid
e and malononitrile furnishes the corresponding oro-2'-hydroxyphenyl)-
5-aryl-1-H/acetylpyrazolines 3a-j, 3a-j, (3',5'-dichloro-2'-hydroxyphe
nyl)-5-arylisoxazoles 4a-j and 3-cyano-4-aryl-6-(3',5'-dichloro-2'-hyd
roxyphenyl) pyridines 5a-j in appropriate solvents. Compounds 3'g, 4a,
4c, 5c and 5f exhibit highest antimicrobial activity against the vari
ous strains of bacteria and fungi.
