The apparent molar isentropic compressibilities of oxalic, malonic, su
ccinic, glutaric and adipic acids have been determined in water and wa
ter +0.016, +0.033, +0.072, +0.117, and +0.171 mole fraction acetone m
ixtures from ultrasonic velocity measurements in varying ranges of con
centration at 303.15 K. The solvation numbers of the acids have been d
etermined in these solvents. The results are discussed in the light of
solute-solvent interactions. The result suggests that the apparent mo
lar isentropic compressibility and the solvation number change with in
crease in hydrophobic chain length (-CH2-groups) of homologous dicarbo
xylic acids.
